"Twenty Questions (and then some)" was created in collaboration with Vaclav Kunes for the Rotterdam Dance Academy (CODARTS) in november 2004. the piece is based on the game Twenty Questions and explores the basic human urge to ask questions and seek answers. By Edd Schouten

WOMAN B
She has anemia. That's partly why she always feels dizzy. Dizzy on the train, on the stairs, on the ascending escalator. She goes to sleep early but gets up late for about 360 days a year. When she was little, her mother took her to the hospital to look for some kind of explanation. The doctor thought she just needs more sleep than normal people. She lives in soho. She is a painter. Water color is her favorite media. She seldom goes out, only when grocery shopping or for important appointments. At the age of twenty-five, her fiance died in an air crash. She's never seen anyone since then. She stopped taking pain killers since then. She prayed the plane would crash every time she took it.
Since then, she's been sleepwalking from time to time. The furthest place she's been in her sleepwalk is her neighbor's home. The guy on the 13th floor fell in love with her on the first night she rang his doorbell at eleven ten. He said hi and told her his name was Ted. He played David Bowie and asked her if she liked their music. She said she did. She always made him dizzy, but he never told her that. He did most of the talking. On a night when he found out she was a sinistral, she told him that she was dizzy before and after they kissed. Maybe he knew she sleepwalked. I don't know. Maybe she knew she was in love with someone. I don't know. I knew she realized that she started to paint a stranger who she felt familiar with.

Femininity is a theme that runs through a lot of your work. What do you find interesting about this kind of subject matter?
I have images of myself that were taken by an ex–lover, and that opened up something for me. They evoke a feeling of tenderness and trust. Moments like these radiate an ambiance that is difficult to articulate. I suppose I am after something autobiographical, but it is not limited to that. I want to create very pretty, feminine images. Maybe it's a buffer against the ugly world we live in. But I find it alluring, and always have.
Historically, women in art have usually been seen through the eyes of the male artist. Do you think it's different when a female artist approaches the subject?
In some senses, but the subject of empowerment is old hat where female sexuality is concerned. My photographs embody a female perspective where taste is the only morality.You've also shot a lot in Japan.

dunno why, while i was into a tremendously tough situation---packing, this song came to my mind. quite an old song, save me. 'come on and save me'. the hotel room becomes mine after nine-night stay and it is damn difficult to turn it back to the empty/neat one.

atm
at the moment, i smell bad and kinda tired. sitting in front of the computer at royal park, tokyo. tomorrow is free but the seminar lasts for another three days next week. not until thursday afternoon can i take my plane home. i miss my own room. i had dreams all night last night. i woke up many times and found my two pillows were both on the floor. did i throw them onto the floor in my dream?
the weather is too dry but i am totally okay with the coldness, even in kyoto today. something happened today. some very good things and some very bad things happened. i found my life always seems to be in between. i dont go extremes, do i?
i should go take a bath. tomorrow i plan to see 中山岩太' exhibition at TOKYO METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY in esubi and some other places. quite a few places to go, actually. and i went to antoher art gallery the other day. i will post some pictures later with Iwata Nakayama's.

murmurmurmurmurmurmurmur
I didn't pack yesterday, which means i have a long way to go in a very limited time TONIGHT. Those pack-smart-tips never work for me. Today a friend I'm going to have lunch with had a car accident. Such thing does happen. All the chinese vegetarian meals in the five-star hotel suck. I feel so tired but i can't fall asleep right away. I need more gb for my mp4 player. I want to read more of James' New Angouleme Miscellany. And J, when will the special project for me be done? My dad seems to have love affair, and so does my mom(kidding). My application is not done yet. One more left. Those unfinished pieces of art I made moan for me. The wallpaper cires, telling lies.
